5 Professional Hair Hacks That Every Girl Should Know
13 September 2018
In between salon visits, it can prove challenging to maintain the perfect mane at home without the right expertise and products by your side. But don’t fret: from detangling and de-greasing to volumising and curling, we’re here to let you in on our top hair tips (from the professionals) for a myriad of hair headaches for at-home and on-the-go. These hair hacks will go hand-in-hand with your own stylist’s recommendations on your own hair.
Hair Hack 1: Detangle Without Damage
Ever get so frustrated with hair knots and tangles that you end up - literally - pulling your hair out? While combing your hair when wet is not generally recommended, sometimes it's the only course of action for really tangled locks. To minimise damage (and reduce further knots), try using a wide-toothed comb or a brush designed for wet hair.
Brush your hair starting from the tips instead of the roots but only after you’ve applied your conditioner. Continue from the tips up to the roots only working upwards once the knots are released. Gentle brushing the whole time as not to pull out any hair unnecessarily.
Hair Hack 2: Greasy Hair, No Time To Wash?
Its 8:00am, you’ve just woken up you have to leave for work in 15 minutes – but you were supposed to wash your hair! Dry shampoo can undoubtedly help you weasel out of this hair predicament, simply by spraying over roots and brushing out until invisible.
Emergency degreasing top tip: use Morning After Dust by Techni.Art from L'Oréal Professionnel for injecting style as well as a freshly-washed look. This dry shampoo is ideal to boost shine without spoiling the colour.
Adam Reed of Percy & Reed and L’Oréal Professionnel Ambassador suggests that gym bunnies use this fave product and advises not to spray directly onto hair
“With dry shampoo, spray onto a brush and into hair, to avoid build up. This will give you the perfect distribution of product.“
Hair Hack 3: Instant Volume, Wherever You Are!
Hair looking a little lacklustre? If you're at home, use your blow-dryer and give your hair a quick burst of air while holding your head upside down. Flick your head back and voilà! Instant volume.
Volumising top tip: If you're not at home, use the same head-flicking technique, but use your fingers to tousle your hair and spray some Redken Wind Blown Dry Finishing Spray while your head is upside down. Instant volume and texture to keep you on top of your game!
Adam’s top tip for keeping your voluminous up-do in place is to
“spray a bobby pin before putting into your hair, once the spray dries it’s tacky in the hair so it’s holds in the hair better.”
We all know the unfavourable effects that intense heat can have on our strands. However, laying off the iron doesn’t mean you have to abstain from curls. You can still enjoy natural-looking waves by tying wet hair into a loose braid before going to bed. In the morning, run your fingers through your hair and witness the curly-haired goddess you have become!
Curly top tip: For more defined curls, smooth on Kérastase Mousse Curl Idéal on to your strands and blow dry, "cupping" sections of the hair to encourage a gentle curl. Or, if you crave waves ready for Hollywood, wrap 5cm sections of your hair around the handle of a brush and blow dry.
Hair Hack 5: Shine Bright Like A Diamond
Looking to sparkle and shine but your hair isn’t singing to the same tune? Shiny hair can be achieved with a few simple steps and a little help from some product heroes. Adam has a quick tip we can all incorporate into our hair regime to boost shine
“Rinsing your hair with cold water will close the cuticle and increase the shine on your hair. Double this up by using a cooler setting on your hair dryer.”
Once you’ve cooled off your strands and your hair is dry, finish with a shine enhancing product to run through your hair and voila, you’ve nailed it! We recommend using a little L’Oréal Professionnel TecniART Liss Control Plus, an ace serum that will go a long way.
Swiftly resolve your pesky hair predicaments by following these quick tips. Practice these techniques alongside personalised advice from your stylist and you’ll never have to trudge through a bad hair day again!
