Turn off your phone, light your candles, and let’s get ready to pamper.
If you’re fighting off the urge to give yourself a haircut out of pure boredom, instead, try out these hairstyles.
Healthy hair is what most of us are striving for, right? You know, the sort of healthier-looking hair that’s shiny, soft and free of split ends. The thing is, heat styling, bleach and overzealous brushing can take their toll (back-combing brush you are guilty as charged). Whatever your length or texture, getting those strands as healthy as possible will make styling your hair that bit easier in the mornings (and we all want that!). Think fewer tangles, quicker drying time and a style that holds better throughout the day. Sounds good, doesn’t it? And whatever the condition of your hair (right now), it really is possible to get it looking and feeling its healthy best. Keep reading for the expert healthy looking hair hacks that will transform your strands.
The foundation of healthy looking hair is a good haircut. Now, don’t panic, “good” doesn’t mean you need to have inches chopped off, you just want to ensure that your hairdresser gets rid of as many split ends as possible. Not only will you have healthier looking hair but it will be easier to style, since split ends are prone to tangling.
If you want to preserve the length and keep your hair looking healthy, then book in for regular dusting appointments. Dusting is where only the splits ends are removed and the cuttings resemble dust, hence the name. Don’t give your hairdresser the excuse to get scissor-happy, book a dusting trim every couple of months and you’ll be able to avoid the (dreaded) 4-inch purge.
World-famous and award-winning hairdresser to celebrities and the royals, Richard Ward, suggests “a clarifying shampoo – like Shu Uemura Art of Hair Cleansing Oil Shampoo – should be an essential step in everyone’s haircare routine. It helps remove any impurities and product build-up from the scalp and hair, leaving your locks feeling much lighter and bouncier.”
Don’t overdo it with the clarifying shampoo though (yes, it’s true, you really can have too much of a good thing), as this could have the opposite effect and strip your strands of much-needed nourishing natural oils. Instead use it once a week, or twice if you use a lot of styling products.
The renowned James Galvin, whose work has been featured in the glossy pages of top beauty and fashion magazines, says “weekly, at-home treatments in between salon appointments will help with the condition of the healthy looking hair and keep it looking super healthy.”
Haircare is key when it comes to achieving healthy hair, you want to look to products aimed at strengthening, preserving length, nourishing and protecting the hair from environmental aggressors like UV and pollution. Kérastase’s new Résistance Extentioniste range is designed to do just that, it’s for people who want long hair without compromising on the condition.
Once a week why not schedule in an at-home treatment? Start by applying the Masque Extensioniste: Length Strengthening Mask, followed by the Serum Extensioniste: Scalp and Hair Serum, which requires you to take a moment to massage it into the scalp and relax (like we need an excuse!). This range should be your go-to if strong, healthy hair is your goal, it’s like a gym membership for your strands! The products (there’s a shampoo and conditioner too) strengthen and supplement the hair with a Creatine RTM Complex. Sound familiar? Well, creatine is a supplement some bodybuilders rely on to get strong and, in this case, it drives into the hair fibre to create temporary bonds within the shafts to strengthen the hair as it grows. The complex also contains ceramides, which are naturally occurring lipids (or fats to you and me) that help your strands stay smooth and supple. Then there’s Maliec Acid, which acts as a ‘chelant’ meaning it is capable of capturing mineral ions (such as calcium) in the hair to bolster it.
“If you like to work out at the gym, I recommend applying a hair mask and sitting in a steam room to allow the treatment to work even deeper. The steam opens up the hair follicles, allowing the mask to penetrate the hair fibre,” says James
Gym doesn’t have a steam room or you’re pushed for time? Try this hair hack instead: apply a mask to your hair and pull it up into a topknot then head to your workout. If you’re doing something high intensity or a class like hot yoga, then your body heat will help the mask to penetrate the strands. After your session simply wash, condition and go.
We all know (our hair more than anyone) that heat styling can weaken your healthy looking hair and isn’t great for achieving that healthy hair goal. But a go-to hair styling habit that involves heat can be a tough one to break. If you’re not going out then why not step away from the tools and air-dry your strands instead? Whether you’re on the road to healthy looking hair or it’s in pretty good condition already, unplugging those heat tools one or two days a week will help you on your healthy looking hair journey. You can do it, we believe in you.
To help, why not try nailing a few different up ‘dos that don’t require tools so you can embrace some heat-free styling throughout the week? A simple topknot or loose braid will look chic without the heat.

If you really can’t part with your hot tools, that’s okay, you don’t have to give up on your dream of healthy hair! Look to specially formulated haircare so you can use your tongs or straighteners guilt-free. “When heat styling, always use a heat protector from mid lengths to ends,” says James. That’s key. Try L'Oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Pli if you have thick hair, or Tecni.ART Constructor if your hair is fine and needs a little added volume and texture alongside the protection.
Afterwards apply “hair oil on the ends for extra nourishment,” James adds. Redken All Soft Argan 6 Oil won’t just nourish your hair, it will tame flyaways and ramp up the shine too.
Cotton pillowcases can cause friction which leads to tangled hair come morning and will accelerate the chances of forming split ends, beauty sleep not so much. While a little bedhead can look cool, full-on tangles are never a good look and all that brushing will damage your strands giving you arm ache to boot. Try this hair hack: switch your current pillowcase for a silk version (fancy), the slippery fabric will prevent your strands from tangling while you sleep. Think of your luxe new pillowcase as an extension of your healthy hair care routine and healthy looking hair can still be yours.
