At this point, beach waves are a classic hairstyle. Easy to achieve, perfectly undone, great for any occasion - and did we mention effortless? This versatile ‘do has been spotted on the red carpet and everywhere in between, proving that beach waves are always appropriate. With the help of Adam Reed, UK Editorial Ambassador for L’Oréal Professionnel, we’ve made a handy little guide to get the surfer-girl hair dreams are made of. The best part? His tips and tricks don’t require actually going to the beach (although it’s always a good idea). Keep reading to learn everything you need to get beach waves that will make even a mermaid jealous!

Beach Waves For Everyone!

First, what do the famous beach waves consist of? Think: perfectly tousled, messy waves that are essentially foolproof to create. If your hair texture is anything but straight, you may have your doubts when it comes to styling beach waves. But that shouldn’t discourage you - “anyone can create cool girl beach waves, it all comes down to the prep!”, Adam assures us. Straight-from-the-sea strands are for everyone? Shell yeah. We think beach waves are the unofficial “model off-duty” hair and we’re more than pleased to hear they can be worked on any hair type. It’s time to erase the idea that this surfer-inspired hairstyle is limited to only one hair texture - ladies (all of you): ‘tis the sea-sun for salt spray!

And while this may be a classic summer trend, you don’t need to be in Bali to try one of the most requested hairstyles in the salon… But this undone, cool-girl ‘do can be done at home, no matter your hair type (even if you’re fighting against your natural texture). With the help of our hair guru, we’ve delivered the ultimate guide to getting flawless beach waves, no matter what hair pattern you have!

How To Get Beach Waves, Per Your Hair Type

One thing we know about getting beach waves right every time, the key lies in the prep! “The steps for creating the perfect beach wave are very different depending on hair type”, says Adam. Whether you’re adorning a head of curls, poker-straight strands, or frizz-prone hair, here are the best tricks to taming - the coolest - beach waves, no matter your hair type.

Beach Waves For Curly Hair

Step 1

Wash hair (but not too much!): it’s important to start with a clean base, but curly hair shouldn’t be completely stripped of its oils to maintain the “undone” look. Instead of reaching for a shampoo, try a cleansing conditioner instead. We love L’Oréal Professionnel Liss Unlimited Cleansing Conditioner - it gently detangles the hair whilst leaving it silky-smooth.

Step 2

Smooth it out: our pro shares some important info -

“if you have curly hair then it is important to smooth first before styling. Try a product like L’Oréal Professionnel TECNI.ART Liss Control, which is designed to control and smooth frizz”

Step 3

Salt spray: it’s time to bring the beach (salt) to your hair!

“L’Oréal Professionnel TECNI.ART Beach Waves is a great one to try, you can spray onto dry or damp hair, work through with your fingers and leave for curly hair types”

Beach Waves For Straight Hair

Step 1

Wash hair with a gentle shampoo and conditioner: “use a good softening shampoo & conditioner”, says Adam. Try salon favourite L’Oréal Professionnel Absolut Repair  instant resurfacing shampoo; it cleanses hair and leaves it with a lightweight touch, ideal for styling beach wavy hair. Follow with a soft conditioning treatment, we love L’Oréal Professionnel Source Essentielle daily detangling cream - this product leaves hair shiny and supple!

Step 2

Pull out the tongs: before picking up heating tools, you should always protect your hair with a heat protectant -

“I love L’Oréal Professionnel Techni.ART Constructor, it adds texture and flexible hold to the hair”, Adam spills. “Don’t over tong the hair - beach waves should be natural, soft and subtle so I suggest taking random pieces of hair and tonging in different directions” Adam advises. He also leaves us with a tip: “after tonging, make sure you brush through the curls with fingers and dishevel ends for a messy finish that isn’t too polished”

Step 3

Set your beach waves: to keep your look tousled-cool, you must use a hairspray that will provide a good hold without the weight. We love L’Oréal Professionnel Infinium dry hairspray. This lightweight hairspray keeps strands in place, dries quickly, and doesn’t leave a sticky residue. Winning all around.

Beach Waves For Wavy Hair

Step 1

Wash with a frizz-eliminating product: don’t let frizz shatter your dreams of the perfect beach waves, use L’Oréal Professionnel Liss Unlimited shampoo to tame frizz and leave hair feeling smooth.

Step 2

Apply some product: because your hair already holds a natural wave, we’re going to work with it rather than against it. Wavy hair should be prepped with thermal protecting product before you hit the salt spray - the pros love L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil Original Oil  Warm 1 to 2 pumps of this nourishing product in your palms and apply evenly through mid-lengths and ends of hair. Next, apply about four sprays of our favourite, L’Oréal Professionnel Beach Waves to damp hair. Pull waves down and working through with fingers until they are softened.

Step 3

Dry: you can either air dry (recommended) or do a quick run through with your blow dryer on medium heat. If you want a more polished finish, be sure to spritz some hairspray onto finished beach waves - boom, good to go.

With summer in full swing, beach waves are life. Follow this guide and get effortless waves every time - sans beach!
