Half up half down hair is (and always will be) the unofficial off-duty supermodel look. Don’t let that fool you… this style is universally flattering and can suit nearly everyone. Yes, you read that right. If you’ve got a mane full of long thick hair, it’s time you meet your new favourite go to ‘do: half up half down hair. And oh no - this isn’t your basic half up half down hairstyle from long thick hair - this rendition includes a plait, heaps of volume and texture for days. Thanks to the coolest “It” girls in Hollywood, we’ve been inspired to create our own version of this beloved hairstyle and we’ve spoken to the man with the plan, Luke Pluckrose, Creative Director at London’s prestigious Saks Hair & Beauty Salon who tells us everything we need to know about achieving this look. We’ve even included an effortless video tutorial just for you (because we love you!). Scroll through to learn just why your favourite celebrities fancy flowing locks with creativity up top!

Half Up Half Down Hair: Why This ‘Do Is For You

Unlike most hairstyles, half up half down hair works on nearly all hair lengths - hello versatility! The rule is: if you can gather enough hair to create a ponytail with the top half of your head, you’re golden. Before you get too excited, note that our rendition works best (but is not limited to) those with long thick hair. One look at this take and you’ll see why - partially because it includes a plait working best on long thick hair and also because it offers massive volume… the latter of which is more prevalent on long thick hair. From weddings to music festivals, you can adapt this ‘do to work for you in any setting. And trust us - with this hair, everyone will stare!

Another reason we’re lusting after half up half down hair? If you have long thick hair and you’re prone to greasy roots but won’t dare break your no-shampoo streak (good for you, stay strong), this style will have you stepping out of the door looking fresh, when in reality it’s been 2-3 days of no shampooing. What’s not to love? If you’re keen on looking sweet whilst embodying a hint of seduction, read below for the hair inspo you need in your life.

Half Up Half Down Hair Per A Pro

There’s no better place to learn than from the pros, they always know best. Luke, our hair guru, provides tips and tricks to achieving the perfect half up half down hair. Every. Single. Time. Besides the fact that it’s eye-catchingly beautiful, the allure of this look lies in the fact that it’s foolproof when it comes to styling. Really - it can be sorted in just a few steps… so buckle down and get ready to fall in love with this effortless hairstyle in only 3 simple steps!

Step 1

Create a workable texture by applying mousse to dry or damp hair.

Use a mousse in the hair to get a better grip for plaiting the hair. Do this in large, loose sections for an undone look”

Luke Pluckrose Creative Director, Saks Hair & Beauty UK

Our favourite mousse? L’Oréal Professionnel Wild Stylers Rebel Push Up Mousse sets the stage for undone texture whilst protecting hair against humidity.

Step 2

Plait head starting from the top and ending at the back - “tease out the plait with fingertips by pinching them and twisting for a more modern, boho look”, Luke tells us.

Step 3

Spray a generous amount of hairspray at the lengths. Pro-approved L'Oréal Professionnel Infinium Hairspray offers high hold without the dreaded crunchy-like texture.

“Leave the hair down the back without a band or pins and hold it with hair spray”

Seeing is believing. Don’t believe us when we say it’s foolproof? Check out our video tutorial here demonstrated by our expert, Luke!

Ways To Wear Your Half Up Half Down Hair

If you thought there was only one way to wear this look, you only know the half of it (sorry, had to). There are ways to update this already updated version to make it more polished and formal. Instead of leaving hair loose at the bottom, try wrapping the lengths of your half up half down hair into a bun for a more done-up approach to the style. If you’re off to something more formal and are looking to make a lasting impression, curl the ends with a curling iron and separate with fingers. This 2.0 version (more like 3.0) takes this ‘do from cute to sultry in seconds. If you’re in a wedding, we love adding pins to the braided portion of the plait to make this hairstyle even more alluring - try floral, pearl, or even gem bobby pins to take your style to the next level!

When all else fails, you always have your better half (up half down hair) to keep you looking fresh!
