Revived trends are the greatest, especially when it comes to hair accessories. The hair accessories - scrunchies, headbands and hair clips that tickled your fancy in the ‘90s have come soaring back onto our style radar, thanks to high fashion. These hair accessories of the past can be seen in pretty much every show from FW, as well as on the manes of your favourite IG influencers. This blast from the past doesn’t take us by surprise one bit. If you’ve ever suffered from a bad hair day, then you know all too well that hair accessories are a girl’s best friend! We love hair accessories not only for their ability to hide unruly hair, but also for the elegant (and equally chic) aesthetic they offer. Here, we’ve rounded up the prettiest hairstyles featuring these retro relics that everyone is dying to indulge in. Read on for the easiest and surest way to step up your stylin’ game!

5 Ways To Update Your ‘Do With Hair Accessories

Who knew that we’d be able to pull off the same hair accessories in 2020 as we did in primary school? Thanks to hair accessories, that dream is now a reality. Awaken your inner schoolgirl with these 5 winning looks featuring hair scrunchies, hair clips and headbands (oh my!). The great thing about this vintage trend? The modern update has left us with so many options in the way of colours and textures, like pearl, tortoise shell (swoon), pastels, leather and silk... just to name a few. Get creative and mix and match your faves for the perfect final touch to any look. As they say, the devil’s in the details.

1. Nape of the neck hair scrunchies bun ft. wispy tendrils

For the days you just want to roll out of bed and not be bothered with doing your hair, this is the ‘do for you. Hair accessories have the ability to upgrade any hairstyle with minimal effort, and this is no exception. What lacks in effort is easily compensated with the help of a pink, velvet scrunchie (gorge). We love a lot of texture in this style, so start by brushing your hair out with your fingers. Then carefully gather hair at the nape of your neck (you should also pull out your face-framing tendrils) and secure with the hair scrunchie of your choice - the chunkier, the better in our opinion!

2. High buns and hair scrunchies

A.K.A the top knot, ballerina bun, or whatever you want to call it… The reason it made our list is because it’s effortless and classic. You can go one of two ways with styling this ‘do, depending on if you fancy a polished bun or a messy top knot. Either way, you will want to finish with hairspray for added texture and hold. We love L’Oréal Professionnel Hairspray Infinium for its shine, fixation and no-residue finish. Start by gathering hair into a high bun at the top of your head. At this point, either brush the flyaways smooth or use your fingers to secure your bun, depending on the look you want. Add your hair scrunchies and spritz with hairspray. Ballerina-approved.

3. Flicky ponytail ft. headbands:

As if we needed more reasons to love this style, it’s handy to know that it works on all hair textures and lengths. Start by spraying a styling primer onto towel-dried hair. Our favourite is L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Pli. This heat-activated spray offers shape, volume and discipline from start to finish. Next, blow dry your hair until it’s completely dry. Then, gather hair into a ponytail and secure with an elastic. Using a hair straightener or curling iron, curl the ends of your ponytail out into a “flick”. Finish with your favourite headband hair accessories- think: pastel, satin or leopard print… The options are endless.

4. Down with volume and headbands

what should be coined as the “preppy schoolgirl” style works just as well in the office as it did in class. It’s fun, flirty and feminine with a touch of posh, what’s not to love? Because your hair will be down and requires minimal styling, you should make it all about the shine. Start by brushing any knots out of your mane. Secure your headband starting at the crown. Tip: gently pull some hair at your crown for more volume. Finish by hitting hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Ring Light Pure styling spray for massive amounts of shine! Be sure to spray in a halo effect for cherub-like results.

5. Middle-parted polished ponytail with hair clips

If you don’t have a lot of length to work with but want to hop on this hair accessories train, this option is your ticket. This look is the lovechild of trendy and retro. Start by brushing hair out so there are no kinks. Next, use a comb for a precise part right down the middle. Gather hair at the back and secure into a low ponytail with an elastic. Then, go heavy with the hairspray (L’Oréal Professionnel Hairspray Infinium) to set the style in place. Spray your hair clips with a bit of hairspray and secure at the side of your head, just above the ear is ideal.
